GB 5606 "Cigarettes" is divided into six parts. - Part
1 Scope
GB 5606.5-2005 is the Chinese national standard on cigarettes-mainstream smoke, in the field of agriculture. It carries no /T suffix, which in the Chinese system means compliance is mandatory: a product or a practice within its scope has to meet it to be lawfully made, sold or carried out in China. It was issued on 17 June 2005 by the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine of the People's Republic of China; Standardization Administration of China, and has been in force since 1 January 2006. This Part of GB 5606 specifies the technical requirements, test methods, inspection rules for the amount of tar, nicotine, carbon monoxide in mainstream cigarette smoke. This Part applies to cigarettes.

GB/T 5606.1 Cigarettes - Part
3.1 Tar content
3.1.1 The tar content grade and the corresponding packet indicated tar content are as given in Table 1.
4 Test method
4.1 Preparation of test sample Take laboratory sample in accordance with GB/T 5606.1, to prepare test sample.
4.2 Tar content It is determined in accordance with GB/T 19609.
4.3 Nicotine content in smoke It is determined in accordance with YC/T 156.
Note. For the organization which does not adopt gas chromatographic method, it may follow YC/T 36 to determine the total plant alkaloid in stead of nicotine, meanwhile make explanatory note in the expression of results.
4.4 Carbon monoxide content in smoke It is determined in accordance with YC/T 30.
5 Inspection rules
5.1 Mainstream smoke quality defects Mainstream smoke quality defects of cigarettes are divided into categories A and B. Among them, tar content is a category A quality defect item, whilst smoke nicotine content and smoke carbon monoxide content are category B quality defects.
5.2 Tar content
5.2.1 If the measured tar content meets the requirements of 3.1, the score will be calculated according to the packet indicated tar content. The low tar content level will get 100 points, the medium tar content level will get 80 points, the high tar content level will get zero point.
5.2.2 If the measured tar content does not meet the requirements of 3.1, the tar content will get zero points, meanwhile, the lot of cigarettes will be judged as unqualified.
5.3 Nicotine content in smoke If the measured nicotine content in smoke meets the requirements of 3.2, the nicotine content in smoke will be scored 100 points; otherwise, zero points will be scored.
