GB 17323-1998 is the English-translated version of 瓶装饮用纯净水.

China's mandatory national standard for bottled purified drinking water. Purified water is defined by its process rather than its source: mains or ground water put through distillation, deionisation, reverse osmosis or an equivalent treatment that removes essentially everything, so the product is water and nothing else. That distinguishes it in law from natural mineral water, which is defined by its source and its dissolved content and may not be treated in the same way. The requirements follow the definition. Conductivity is the operative test, because it measures directly what the process was supposed to achieve. Around it sit the microbiological limits, which matter more than they might seem: purified water has no residual disinfectant and no competing flora, so a contamination that enters at bottling grows unopposed. The standard specifies the requirements, the test methods, the inspection rules and the labelling.

Foreword

This Standard is a product standard for bottled purified water for drinking. Its definition, scope all refer to Bottled Water, a modified standard which was issued by United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1993. The test method of "conductivity" is listed in Annex A of this Standard. This Standard was proposed by China Light Industry Association. This Standard shall be under the jurisdiction of China National Food Fermentation Standardization Center. The drafting organizations of this Standard. 1 Scope

China's mandatory national standard for bottled purified drinking water. Purified water is defined by its process rather than its source: mains or ground water put through distillation, deionisation, reverse osmosis or an equivalent treatment that removes essentially everything, so the product is water and nothing else. That distinguishes it in law from natural mineral water, which is defined by its source and its dissolved content and may not be treated in the same way. The requirements follow the definition. Conductivity is the operative test, because it measures directly what the process was supposed to achieve. Around it sit the microbiological limits, which matter more than they might seem: purified water has no residual disinfectant and no competing flora, so a contamination that enters at bottling grows unopposed. This Standard specifies technical requirements, test methods, inspection rules and marks, packaging, transport, storage requirements for bottled purified water for drinking. It is applicable to the product defined in Clause 3 of this Standard.

2 Normative references

The following standards contain the provisions which, through reference in this Standard, constitute the provisions of this Standard. At the time of publication of this Standard, the versions shown are valid. All standards shall be revised. 3 Definition

This Standard applies the following definition.

3.1 bottled purified water for drinking the water which complies with drinking water health standards is called water source;

4 Technical requirements

4.1 The water source must comply with technical requirements of GB 5749.

4.2 Sensory requirements Sensory requirements shall comply with the provision in Table 1.

4.3 Physical and chemical indicators

4.4 Microbial indicators Microbial indicators shall be performed according to the provisions of GB 17324.

4.5 Net content Negative deviation of net content of one-piece quantitative packaging must not exceed the provisions in Table

4.The average net content of extracted sample in the same batch must not be less than the net content indicated on the label.

5 Test methods

Water for test shall be in accordance with the provisions of GB 6682.

5.1 Chroma, turbidity, smell and taste, visible substance shall be determined by the method specified in GB/T 8538.

5.3 Conductivity. see Annex A.

5.4 Lead, arsenic, copper, cyanide, volatile acids, free chlorine, chloroform, carbon tetrachloride, nitrite, microbial indicators shall be determined by the method specified in GB 17324.

5.5 Net content Under conditions of (20±2)°C, slowly pour the water sample into measuring cylinder along with container wall. Read the number of volumes.

6 Inspection rules

6.1 Batch The products of same frequency, filled by same filling machine, of the same specifications shall be one batch.

6.2 Exit-factory inspection

6.2.1 Before exit-factory inspection, the product shall be inspected in batch by the inspection department of manufacturer in accordance with the provisions of this Standard. After the product is inspected as qualified, it shall issue certificate. Only the product attached with quality certificate inside (outside) of packaging box can leave factory.

6.2.3 Exit-factory inspection items Inspection items for each batch are sensory requirements, net content, pH value, conductivity, total number of colonies and coliform. Other items are for unscheduled sampling inspection.

6.3 Type inspection

6.3.1 Type inspection shall be carried out once a quarter or a production cycle. The type inspection shall be carried out in in any of the following cases.

6.3.2 Sampling method and quantity From any batch of product, 18 bottles (cans) shall be randomly extracted. 9 bottles (cans) are used for the inspection of sensory requirements, net content, physical and chemical indicators [3 bottles (cans) for net content inspection]; 3 bottles (cans) are for the inspection of microorganisms; another 6 bottles (cans) are for standby.

6.3.3 Type inspection items It shall include all items required by technical requirements of this Standard.

6.4 Determination rules

6.4.1 In exit-factory inspection results, if sensory requirements, net content, pH value, conductivity fail to comply with this Standard, it shall conduct re- inspection by double-sampling from this batch of products for unqualified products. If there is still one item fail to comply with this Standard in re- inspection, this batch of products shall be determined as unqualified.

7.1 Marks

7.1.1 On the product label, it shall mark in accordance with relevant provisions of GB 7718.product name, net content, name and address of manufacturer (or distributor), date of production, shelf life and product standard number. The product name and net content must be ranked in the same field of vision.

7.1.4 Marks for storage and transportation icons shall comply with relevant provisions of GB 191.

7.2 Packaging In addition to corresponding health requirements and management practices, packaging materials and containers shall also comply with relevant provisions of GB 10790.

7.3 Transport

7.3.1 The means of transport shall be clean and sanitary. The product must not transported with toxic, harmful, corrosive, volatile items or items with peculiar smell.
