GB 13600 governs the disposal of low-level radioactive solid waste in rock caverns, and the limited disposal of intermediate-level waste in the same facilities. It runs the whole life of a repository — site selection, design, construction, operation, closure, post-closure monitoring and inspection, safety assessment and quality assurance — and it is the standard against which a Chinese disposal facility is licensed and audited. The 2024 edition replaces GB 13600-1992, a text more than thirty years old, and was issued jointly with the Ministry of Ecology and Environment. Issued on 28 November 2024, in force since 1 January 2025.
