Foreword

This document is drafted in accordance with the rules given in GB/T 1.1-2020, Directives for standardization - Part 1: Rules for the structure and drafting of standardizing documents.

This document replaces GB 12142-2007, Safety requirements for portable metal ladders. Compared with GB 12142-2007, apart from structural adjustments and editorial changes, the main technical changes are as follows:

- the scope has been changed (see Clause 1; Clause 1 of the 2007 edition);

- some terms and definitions have been changed (see Clause 3; Clause 3 of the 2007 edition);

- the requirements for the rated load have been changed (see 4.1.1; 4.1 of the 2007 edition);

- the requirements for the spacing of rungs/steps and platforms have been changed (see 4.2.1; 4.7.1 of the 2007 edition);

- the requirements for the width of leaning ladders have been changed (see 4.2.2.2; 5.2 of the 2007 edition);

- the requirements for the width of standing ladders have been changed (see 4.2.4.2; 6.2 of the 2007 edition);

- requirements for tool trays and handrails have been added (see 4.2.4.4);

- structural dimension requirements for telescopic ladders and hinged ladders have been added (see 4.2.5 and 4.2.6);

- the performance requirements and test methods for leaning ladders have been changed (see 4.3.2 and 5.3; Clause 9 of the 2007 edition);

- the performance requirements and test methods for extending ladders have been changed (see 4.3.3 and 5.4; Clause 9 of the 2007 edition);

- the performance requirements and test methods for standing ladders have been changed (see 4.3.4 and 5.5; Clause 10 of the 2007 edition);

- the performance requirements and test methods for combination ladders have been changed (see 4.3.7 and 5.8; Clause 11 of the 2007 edition);

- performance requirements and test methods for telescopic ladders have been added (see 4.3.5 and 5.6);

- performance requirements and test methods for hinged ladders have been added (see 4.3.6 and 5.7);

- part of the content of the clause "Requirements for use" has been changed (see Clause 6; Clause 8 of the 2007 edition);

- warning requirements for the risk of trapping hands have been added (see 7.3.6);

- requirements for the test sequence have been added (see Annex A).

- first issued in 1989 as GB 12142-1989, Safety standard for two-section light metal extension ladders;

- first revised in 2007, when GB 7059.3-1986, Safety standard for movable light metal self-supporting ladders, and GB 12142-1989, Safety standard for two-section light metal extension ladders, were revised and combined into GB 12142-2007, Safety requirements for portable metal ladders;

- this is the second revision.
