1 Scope

YY/T 2006 brings a traditional therapy under a modern device standard. It gives the classification of electrical cupping equipment, specifies the requirements and describes the corresponding test methods. Cupping applies negative pressure to the skin; doing it with a pump rather than a flame turns the cup into an active medical device, with the suction level, its control and its safety limits becoming measurable characteristics rather than matters of practitioner judgement. It belongs to the growing YY/T series on traditional Chinese medicine instruments, issued alongside YY/T 2005 on the acupotomy needle-knife. For a manufacturer or an exporter of electrical cupping units, including the consumer-facing devices that reach Western markets, this is the Chinese standard that defines what the equipment has to do and how it is tested.

3 Terms and Definitions
