Scope
GB/T 9833.9-2013 is the English-translated version of 紧压茶 第9部分:青砖茶.
Part 9 of China's national standard for compressed tea, covering qing zhuan or green brick tea. Green brick is Hubei's contribution to the compressed tea trade, made around Chibi and Xianning from lao qing cha - old green tea, meaning coarse mature leaf and stem picked late, which would be worthless as a loose tea and is exactly what a brick wants. It was the tea of the northern overland route: pressed in Hubei, carried through Shanxi to Mongolia and on into Siberia, where it fed a trade that ran for two centuries and gave the Russian word for tea its Chinese root. The brick is hard, dark and made to survive that journey, and it is drunk boiled with milk. Its production is the shortest of the family - the old green tea is steamed, pressed and dried, without the long piling of the Hunan dark teas. This part specifies the requirements, test methods, inspection rules, marking, labelling, packaging, transport, storage and shelf life for green brick tea, completing the nine-part series.
