Scope

GB/T 9833.2-2013 is the English-translated version of 紧压茶 第2部分:黑砖茶.

Part 2 of China's national standard for compressed tea, covering hei zhuan or black brick tea. Black brick is the plainest and historically the most widely traded of the Hunan dark teas, pressed from black raw tea into a dense rectangular brick that was the currency of the northwestern tea trade - it travelled to Xinjiang, Gansu and beyond, where it is still drunk boiled with milk and salt rather than infused. Its production runs through the same sequence as its relatives: the raw tea is screened, semi-finished materials are blended to a formula, the tea is piled and fermented, then steamed, pressed and dried slowly. The drying is what takes the time, because a brick that is dried too fast cracks and one dried too slowly moulds in the wrong way. Unlike the flower brick, hei zhuan is not cultivated for the golden flower fungus, which is the distinction between the two products. This part specifies the requirements, test methods, inspection rules, marking, labelling, packaging, transport, storage and shelf life for black brick tea.
