Scope
GB/T 8487-2010 is the English-translated version of 港口装卸术语.
China's national terminology for port cargo handling. China operates most of the world's largest container ports, and the vocabulary of moving cargo across a quay is one of the places where imprecision costs money directly: a port's tariff, its performance guarantees, its lease agreements and its operating statistics are all expressed in these terms, and the difference between a move, a lift and a shift, or between berth productivity and crane productivity, is the difference between two different invoices. The terms cover the operations themselves - loading, discharging, shifting, stuffing and stripping - the equipment, the areas of the terminal, and the measures by which throughput and productivity are reported. Since Chinese port operators now run terminals worldwide and Chinese equipment builders supply most of the world's ship-to-shore cranes, the vocabulary standardised here travels with them. The standard specifies the port handling terms with their definitions and descriptions, and applies to port loading and unloading operations and their management.
