Scope

GB/T 8423.3-2018 is the English-translated version of 石油天然气工业术语 第3部分:油气地面工程.

Part 3 of China's national petroleum and natural gas terminology, covering surface engineering. Surface engineering is everything between the wellhead and the pipeline or the tanker: the gathering system, the separators that divide oil, gas and water, the treatment that dehydrates and stabilises the crude, the produced water handling, the compression, the storage and the metering at the custody transfer point. It is where most of a field's capital is spent after the wells are drilled, and it is executed by engineering contractors working to specifications in which every term has to be unambiguous. This part covers onshore surface engineering, offshore petroleum engineering and liquefied natural gas engineering together, which reflects how Chinese contractors now work - the same companies build all three, increasingly outside China. The document defines the basic terms and definitions for those three fields, applies to oil and gas surface, offshore and LNG engineering, and may be referenced in other areas of the industry.
