Scope

GB/T 7738-2008 is the English-translated version of 铁合金产品牌号表示方法.

This standard fixes the basic principles and the methods for representing ferroalloy product grades, a term the draft also renders as brands. Clause 1 says the standard applies to the preparation of ferroalloy product grades, and the page records no exclusion.

The draft prints clause 1 Scope and then a second clause on the basic principles of grade representation, whose heading is garbled and whose number is not printed, carrying the subclauses 2.1 to 2.4, after which the copy breaks off.

That clause requires grades to be prepared to this standard where alloy products are covered by national and industry standards, requires grades that the ferroalloy product grade standard does not specify to be prepared on the principles of this standard, and states that grades are formed by combining phonetic alphabet letters, chemical element symbols, Arabic numerals and letters of the alphabet.

Table 1 lists the common chemical element symbols, with a note that the mixed rare earth element is represented by the symbol RE, and 2.3.2 refers the symbols of product names, uses, properties and process methods to Table 2.

Subclause 2.3.1 explains that the phonetic letters standing for product names, uses, process methods and properties are taken from the representative Chinese phonetic characters, the first letter in principle and a second or third letter where the letter is already taken by another product, in principle one letter and usually not more than two; 2.4 adds that the parts of a grade are set in order, that a part may be omitted where it is not necessary and that, unless otherwise specified, no gaps are left between the phonetic letters, the element symbols, the Arabic numerals and the letters of the alphabet.

The foreword records that the revision modified the basic principles of grade representation, added Table 2 of the symbols for product names, uses, properties and process methods, completed part of the grade representations and added the informative Appendix A. It was proposed by China Iron and Steel Association, is under the National Standardization Technical Committee of pig iron and ferroalloy and was drafted by Metallurgical Industry Information Standards Institute, and the foreword adds that the standard was first released in March 1987.

It replaces GB/T 7738-1987, was issued on 5 August 2008 and has applied since 1 April 2009.
