Scope
GB/T 5518-2008 is the English-translated version of 粮油检验 粮食、油料相对密度的测定.
GB/T 5518-2008 is a grain and oils inspection method for the relative density of grain and oilseeds.
Clause 1 states that the standard specifies the terms and definitions, principle, reagents, apparatus and appliances, sample preparation, analysis steps and calculation of results for the relative density of grain and oilseeds; the sentence that follows, on what the standard applies to, is garbled in the draft version on the page and in the summary alike, and cannot be read with confidence.
Clause 3 carries a single definition whose term name the draft does not print, for the ratio, at a given temperature and under given operating conditions, of the mass of the grain or oilseed to the mass of the same volume of water, taken on its net volume.
The clause printed as Principle 4 adds a weighed quantity of grain or oilseed to a measured volume of liquid, takes the increase in liquid volume as the net volume of the sample and computes the ratio against the mass of an equal volume of water.
Clause 5, Reagents, lists 95% ethanol of analytical grade and a 20% ethanol made up from 21 mL of the 95% ethanol and 79 mL of distilled water, and clause 6, apparatus and appliances, calls for a balance with a division value of 0.01 g, a 25 mL cylinder graduated in 0.1 mL and a long-necked density bottle with a piston, graduated in 0.1 mL over 10 mL with the zero mark low on the neck.
Clause 7 refers sample preparation to GB 5491, with impurities and imperfect pieces removed, and the clause printed as Analysis Step 8 opens with 8.1, the cylinder method, carried out at a room temperature of 22 degrees C plus or minus 5 degrees C on a sample of about 5 g weighed to 0.01 g in 10 mL of the 20% ethanol, the rise in liquid level being read once the surface is still; the draft ends after that subclause.
Clause 2 cites GB 5491.
The foreword records that the two methods of the 1985 edition were combined, that terms and definitions and a principle were added, that the sample and reagent requirements were modified, that requirements on the measurement environment were added and that the repeatability requirement for the calculation of results was changed.
It replaces GB/T 5518-1985, was issued on 2008-11-04 and has applied since 2009-01-20.

Foreword
This standard replaces GB/T 5518-1985 "grain and oilseeds for food inspection determination of specific gravity." This standard and GB/T 5518-1985 main technical differences are as follows.

1 Scope
This standard specifies the grain and oilseeds relative density of terms and definitions, principle, reagents, apparatus and appliances, sample preparation, analysis step And the results of calculations.
