1 Scope

This document defines terms related to space debris and their definitions.

This document is applicable to scientific research, engineering practice and academic exchanges related to the field of space debris.

3 General terms

3.1 space object spaceobject

Natural objects (celestial bodies) and man-made objects that orbit in the universe.

3.2 Meteoroid

Small celestial bodies in the solar system with sizes ranging from 30µm to 1m.

3.3 Micrometeoroid

Small, dust-sized meteoroids.

Note. Usually refers to meteoroids with a size less than 1 mm.

3.4 Small solar system body

Solar system bodies other than planets, dwarf planets and their satellites.

3.5 asteroid

Small rocky solar system bodies ranging in size from 1m to about 1000km.

3.6 Near Earth Object (NEO)

Small Solar System bodies with orbital perihelion distances less than 1.3 AU.

Note. Includes two major categories. near-Earth asteroids and near-Earth comets.

3.7 Near Earth Asteroid;NEA

Asteroids with an orbital perihelion less than 1.3 AU.

3.8 comet comet

Small solar system bodies composed of ice, dust, and larger rocks that typically move in elliptical orbits.
