GB/T 45330-2025 measures the water in lithium-ion cathode powder, and in cell manufacturing few numbers are watched more closely. Water reacts with the fluorinated salt in the electrolyte to form hydrofluoric acid, which attacks the cathode surface and the current collector; it also generates gas inside a sealed cell. The consequences are capacity fade, swelling, and in the worst case a safety event, and they appear months after the cell was built, by which time the material that caused them is long gone. Cathode materials are hygroscopic, so the moisture level is a property of how the powder was handled as much as of how it was made, which is why it is measured on incoming material rather than assumed. This document describes the Karl Fischer coulometric method for determining water content in lithium-ion battery cathode materials - coulometry being the variant suited to the very low levels involved. It applies to cathode materials including lithium cobalt oxide (LCO) and nickel cobalt manganese oxide (NCM) among others. It is written for cathode material producers, cell manufacturers' incoming inspection laboratories, and the analytical laboratories serving them.
