1 Scope

GB/T 44618-2024 specifies the fruit of the lacquer tree, Toxicodendron vernicifluum. The tree is grown in China for its sap, the raw material of true lacquer, and the fruit is a second crop from the same plantation: the waxy mesocarp yields Japan wax, used in cosmetics, candles and coatings, and the kernel yields an oil. The material is traded between growers and processors on characteristics that need defining - the proportion of true seed in a consignment above all, which is what determines the wax yield. The standard sets the quality requirements, the inspection methods, the inspection rules covering sampling, batching and the decision rules, the labelling and marking, and the packaging, storage and transport provisions, with a normative annex giving the determination of the lacquer seed content. It takes effect on 1 April 2025.

This document defines the terminology of Rhus verniciflua seeds and specifies the quality requirements, inspection rules, labelling and identification, and requirements for packaging, storage and transportation. The test method is described. This document applies to the acquisition, storage, transportation, trade and processing of commercial Rhus verniciflua seeds for oil production.

3 Terms and definitions

The following terms and definitions apply to this document.

3.1 The fruit of Toxicodendron consists of a seed coat (3.2) and a seed core (3.3), which contains a kernel.
