GB/T 42772-2023 gives the guidelines for applying ankle-foot orthoses after stroke. Foot drop is the commonest obstacle to walking again after a stroke, and there are a dozen kinds of AFO - thermoplastic, posterior leaf spring, spiral, static, ground reaction, hinged, dynamic - that do quite different things to the gait. Prescribing the wrong one at the wrong stage does not merely fail to help: a rigid orthosis fitted during the flaccid phase can prevent the recovery of the movement it was meant to substitute for. The standard sets out what each type of orthosis does in stroke rehabilitation, and then the selection of the orthosis at each stage of recovery - the flaccid phase, the spastic phase and the improvement phase - together with the fitting, training and follow-up. It took effect on 1 December 2023.

1 Scope

GB/T 42772-2023 gives the guidelines for applying ankle-foot orthoses after stroke.
