GB/T 40724-2021 is the Chinese national vocabulary for carbon fiber and carbon fiber composites. It defines terms in five groups: carbon fiber itself, matrix and additives, carbon fiber composite materials, performance and characterization, and statistics, evaluation and process control, and closes with an index.
The carbon fiber entries separate, for example, carbon fiber with more than 90% carbon by mass from graphite fiber with at least 99%, and classify fibers by precursor as PAN-based, viscose-based, pitch-based, lignin-based or vapor-grown, alongside high-strength grades.
Definitions cross-refer to related terms by clause number. It applies to carbon fiber and its composite materials and has no normative references. It was issued on 11 October 2021 and has applied since 1 May 2022.

This document is in accordance with the provisions of GB/T 1.1-2020 "Guidelines for Standardization Work Part 1: Structure and Drafting Rules of Standardization Documents" Drafting.
1 Scope
This document defines the terms and definitions involved in carbon fiber, matrix and additives, and carbon fiber composite materials.
This document applies to carbon fiber and its composite materials.
2 Normative references

3 Carbon fiber terminology
3.1 Carbon fiber
A fiber (3.27) with a carbon content (6.5) exceeding 90% (mass fraction) produced by the pyrolysis and recombination of organic fibers.
3.2 Graphite fiber
After graphitization (3.23), the carbon content (6.5) is not less than 99% (mass fraction) of carbon fiber (3.1).
3.3 Carbon fiber precursor
After pyrolysis, the organic fiber can be transformed into carbon fiber (3.1).
3.4 PAN-based carbon fiber
Carbon fiber (3.1) made from acrylonitrile polymer (PAN) precursor.
3.5 Rayon-based carbon fiber; viscose-based carbon fiber
Carbon fiber made from viscose precursor (3.1).
3.6 Pitch-based carbon fiber
Carbon fiber (3.1) made from anisotropic or isotropic pitch and other precursors rich in fused aromatic hydrocarbons.
3.7 Lignin-based carbon fiber
Carbon fiber made from lignin precursor (3.1).
3.8 Vapor-grown carbon fiber
Carbon fiber (3.1) formed by catalyzing the decomposition of hydrocarbons in the gas phase.
3.9 High strength carbon fiber
Carbon fiber with high tensile strength (3.1).
