GB/T 40193-2021 is the English-translated version of 长芒苋检疫鉴定方法.
GB/T 40193-2021 describes how to detect and identify Palmer amaranth, Amaranthus palmeri S. Watson, for plant quarantine purposes. It covers two approaches: identification from the plant's morphology and identification from the ITS sequence of its ribosomal DNA.
The standard defines the botanical terms the identification relies on, such as dioecious, utricle, bract and tepal, and the abbreviations DNA and ITS. Laboratory work has to follow the biosafety requirements of GB 19489-2008 and the phytosanitary laboratory quality control rules of GB/T 27402-2008.

This document describes the morphology and ITS sequence quarantine and identification methods of Amaranthus longifolia.
This document is applicable to the quarantine and identification of amaranth.

3 Terms, definitions and abbreviations
3.1 Terms and definitions
The following terms and definitions apply to this document.
3.1.1 Dioecious
In seed plants with unisexual flowers, the male and female flowers are on different plants.
Note: A unisexual flower is a flower with only stamens or pistils in a flower, as opposed to bisexual flowers.
3.1.2 Utricle
The fruit has a thin skin, contains 1 seed, and is a bladder-shaped swollen fruit.
3.1.3 Bract
A reduced leaf or leaf-like structure at the base of a flower or inflorescence.
3.1.4 Tepal
Corolla and calyx collectively.
Note: The flowers of the genus Amaranth have no corolla and calyx.
3.2 Abbreviations
The following abbreviations apply to this document.
