Scope
GB/T 36783-2018 is the English-translated version of 种植根茎类蔬菜的旱地土壤镉、铅、铬、汞、砷安全阈值.
GB/T 36783-2018 sets safety thresholds for five heavy metals and metalloids - cadmium, lead, chromium, mercury and arsenic - in dryland (upland) soils used to grow root and tuber vegetables.
It defines root vegetables, such as radish, carrot, potato, onion and turnip, and the safety threshold, meaning the maximum content in the soil that still keeps the harvested produce safe to eat.
The threshold values are given in tables, and a further clause covers monitoring and analysis, with soil sampling to NY/T 395 and determination of lead, cadmium, mercury, arsenic, chromium, pH, organic matter and cation exchange capacity by the referenced GB/T, HJ and NY/T methods.
It is intended for the environmental quality assessment and management of such soils. It was issued on 17 September 2018 and has applied since 1 April 2019.

3 Terms and definitions
The following terms and definitions apply to this document.
3.1 Root vegetables
A general term for vegetables that are grown by straight roots and become fleshy roots or underground metamorphosed organs (tubers, bulbs, roots, etc.).
Note: such as radish, carrot, potato, onion, turnip, etc.
3.2 Safety threshold
The maximum allowable content of cadmium, lead, chromium, mercury and arsenic in the soil that guarantees the safe consumption of agricultural products.
4 Safety threshold
The safety thresholds of cadmium, lead, chromium, mercury and arsenic in dryland soils with root vegetables are shown in Tables 1 to 3.
