Scope
GB/T 36498-2018 is the English-translated version of 柔性直流换流站绝缘配合导则.
GB/T 36498-2018 is a guide to insulation co-ordination for flexible DC converter stations that have no standard insulation levels.
It covers the typical arrester layout of a flexible DC converter station and its graphical symbols, the insulation co-ordination principles, operating voltages, arrester characteristics and stresses, the design procedure, air gaps in the station and creepage distances.
Informative annexes work through examples for the ±320 kV Xiamen symmetric bipolar station, a ±420 kV symmetric monopole station and the ±500 kV Zhangbei multi-terminal symmetric bipolar station.
It applies only to the flexible DC converter station part of a power system, not to industrial converter equipment or conventional HVDC converter stations, and deals with insulation co-ordination rather than personal safety.
It builds on GB/T 311.1-2012, GB/T 311.3-2017 and IEC 60099-9, was issued on 17 September 2018 and has applied since 1 April 2019.

Foreword
This standard was drafted in accordance with the rules given in GB/T 1.1-2009.
1 Scope
This standard gives guidelines for the insulation coordination of flexible DC converter stations without standard insulation levels.
This standard applies only to the flexible DC converter station part of the power system.
This standard does not apply to industrial converter equipment and conventional DC transmission engineering converter stations.
The given principles and rules apply only to the purpose of insulation coordination and do not involve personal safety requirements.

3.1 Insulation co-ordination
After considering the overvoltage protection measures used, determine the possible operating voltage on the equipment, and depending on the insulation characteristics of the equipment and possible effects The factors of insulation properties determine the insulation strength of the equipment from the aspects of safe operation and technical economic rationality. [GB/T 311.1-2012, definition 4.1]
3.2 Nominal DC voltage
The average value of the DC voltage required to transmit the nominal power at nominal current.
