What is GB/T 36003-2018?

GB/T 36003-2018, "Food can made of tinplate or electrolytic chromium-coated steel (ECCS)", is China's national standard for empty food cans. It covers classification, materials, dimensions, appearance, coating performance, test methods, inspection rules, marking, packaging, transport and storage of cans for meat, poultry, seafood, fruit, vegetables, cereals, legumes and other foods that must be commercially sterile after sealing and sterilisation.

When does GB/T 36003-2018 apply?

GB/T 36003-2018 was issued on 15 March 2018 by SAMR and the Standardization Administration of China and has applied since 1 October 2018.

Which can types does GB/T 36003-2018 define?

By structure, three-piece and two-piece cans. GB/T 36003-2018 also defines plain tinplate cans (uncoated inside), lacquered cans (coated body and lid) and striped cans, whose weld seam carries a protective touch-up coating, plus the enamel rate used to check the integrity of the internal coating.

Which materials must cans meet under GB/T 36003-2018?

Tinplate to GB/T 2520, ECCS to GB/T 24180 and coated sheet to QB/T 2763. Sealants must meet GB 9685 and GB 4806.1, internal coatings GB 9685 and GB 4805, and release coatings GB 9685 and GB 9682. Easy-open lids follow GB/T 29603-2013.

What performance tests does GB/T 36003-2018 require for food cans?

Checks of the internal and external coatings after curing, an acid resistance test and a sulfur resistance test, chosen according to the contents and the sterilisation process. The internal coating must show no whitening, peeling or significant corrosion.

Are there special rules for mushroom cans in GB/T 36003-2018?

Yes. Plain tinplate cans for mushrooms must use chemically passivated tinplate with surface chromium of no more than 1.5 mg/m², made from tinplate produced within the previous 12 months.

Is GB/T 36003-2018 available in English?

Yes. ChinaStandards.org offers an English version of GB/T 36003-2018, including the dimension tables and the common can specifications in Appendix A, with invoice.

3 Terms and Definitions

For the purposes of this Document, the terms and definitions given in GB/T 14251 and the following apply.

3.1 Plain tinplate can

The can body is made of uncoated tinplate (i.e., the interior surface lacks a coating), but an internal strip may be applied to protect the weld seam.

3.2 Lacquered tinplate can

A can in which the can body and the inner surface of the lid are made of coated tinplate or electrolytic chromium-coated steel.

3.3 Striped can

A can with touch-up coating applied to the weld seam of the can body.

3.4 Stripe

An anti-corrosion coating that is applied to the weld seam and the areas on both sides of it by means of roller coating, spraying, or electrostatic spraying.

3.5 Enamel rate

One of the indicators characterizing the integrity of the internal coating film; specifically, the value of the conducted current resulting from micropores or damage on the internal coating film surface caused by raw materials or the manufacturing process.

4 Classification

4.1 Based on their structure, empty cans are classified into three-piece cans and two-piece cans. See Figure 1 for examples.

5 Materials

5.1 Tinplate

The tinplate shall comply with the provisions of GB/T 2520; its basic characteristics shall be confirmed by both the supplier and the purchaser.

5.2 Electrolytic chromium-coated steel
