GB/T 35931-2018 is the English-translated version of 棉纤维棉结和短纤维率测试方法 光电法.
GB/T 35931-2018 specifies a photoelectric method for measuring the neps and the short fibre content of cotton fibres. It applies to raw cotton and to cotton sliver.
The standard defines fibre neps, seed coat neps, span length (commonly given as 2.5 % and 50 % span length), effective length and short fibre content, the share of fibres below a length limit such as 12.7 mm or 16 mm, expressed by mass or by number of fibres.
It relies on GB/T 5705 for cotton terminology, GB/T 6097 for sampling, GB/T 6529 for the conditioning and testing atmosphere, GB/T 8170 for rounding and GB/T 6379.2-2004 for repeatability and reproducibility.
Cotton testing laboratories use it to measure these properties with a photoelectric analyser. It was issued on 6 February 2018 and has applied since 1 September 2018.

1 Scope
This standard specifies the photoelectric method of determination of cotton fiber neps and staple fiber rate method.
This standard applies to the original cotton and cotton sliver.

3 Terms and definitions
GB/T 5705 defined and the following terms and definitions apply to this document.
3.1 Fiber cotton knot
Cotton fiber entangled with each other to form the knot.
3.2 Seed meal neps
Cottonseed fragments with cotton fibers.
3.3 Span length
In the fiber imager length curve, the length of fiber spanning the relative root percent of fiber, the relative number of fibers at the fiber holding line It is 100%.
Note: The commonly used 2.5% and 50% span length said.
3.4 Effective length
The effective length (Leff) is geometrically obtained by plotting the fiber length (Bayesian plot).
3.5 Short fiber rate
The quality (or root number) of fibers in the cotton fiber that is shorter than a certain length limits the percentage of the total mass (or number of fibers) in the fiber.
