Scope

GB/T 35224-2017 is the English-translated version of 地面气象观测规范 天气现象.

GB/T 35224-2017 is the weather phenomena part of the specifications for surface meteorological observation.

Clause 1 states that it specifies the technical requirements and the observational methods for observing weather phenomena in surface meteorological observation, and that it applies to the ground observation of weather phenomena by artificial observation; no exclusions are given.

The foreword places it fourth in a series of seventeen standards on surface meteorological observation, which runs from GB/T 35221 on general rules through cloud, meteorological visibility, weather phenomena, atmospheric pressure, air temperature and humidity, wind direction and wind speed, precipitation, snow depth and snow pressure, evaporation, radiation, sunshine, ground temperature, frozen soil, wire ice and ground conditions to GB/T 35237 on automatic observation.

Clause 3 takes the definitions of GB/T 35221 and GB/T 35223 and adds three of its own: the weather phenomenon, described as a physical phenomenon that occurs under certain weather conditions in the atmosphere, as precipitation on the ground, as the condensation or freezing of water vapour, as a visual barrier, or as lightning, light or wind; the ground condensation phenomenon, which is the condensation of water vapour on the ground or on objects; and the visibility obstacle phenomenon, whose intensity is directly related to weather visibility.

Clause 4 divides the weather into thirty-four kinds and groups them into precipitation, the condensation and freezing of water vapour, atmospheric dust phenomena such as smoke screen, haze, blowing sand, dust and sandstorm, wind phenomena such as gale, tornado and dust tornado, thunder, electricity and light phenomena such as thunderstorm, lightning and aurora, and other phenomena.

Clause 2 cites GB/T 35221 and GB/T 35223. Clause 4 prints all six groups of the thirty-four kinds, though two of the phenomenon names are left in the draft as Chinese characters. It was issued on 29 December 2017 and has applied since 1 July 2018.
