GB/T 30740-2014 is the Chinese national method for determining the total organic carbon of marine sediment by non-dispersive infrared absorption.
It specifies the principle, the reagents and apparatus, the collection and preparation of the sample - including the removal of inorganic carbon - the combustion and measurement procedure, and the calculation, precision and test report.
It applies to sediments from estuaries, bays, coastal waters and the open sea. Marine monitoring institutes and environmental laboratories use it, since organic carbon is one of the indicators that describe the state of the sea bed. Issued on 27 March 2014, it has applied since 1 October 2014.

1 Scope
This standard specifies the method for the determination of total organic carbon in marine sediments with a non-dispersive infrared absorption.
This standard applies to the determination of estuaries, bays, coastal and ocean sediments TOC.

3 Terms and Definitions
The following terms and definitions apply to this document.
3.1 Marine sediments
General term for various marine seabed sediment formed by deposition.
3.2 Total carbon totalcarbon; TC
Carbon in general, including organic carbon and inorganic carbon.
3.3 Total inorganic carbon totalinorganiccarbon; TIC
Inorganic carbon in general, including the carbonate or bicarbonate of carbon present in the form.
3.4 TOC totalorganiccarbon; TOC
Organic general form of the element carbon.
4 Principle of the method
The samples were high temperature combustion or acid treatment, the appropriate form of carbon is converted to carbon dioxide, generated by the sample and the sample of Proportional to the carbon content. An oxygen carrier, the content of carbon dioxide to form carbon content is calculated corresponding measured by an infrared detector.
TOC can be used directly or subtraction method was measured.
