GB/T 26958.85-2022 is the part of the GPS filtration series that deals with morphological areal filters used for segmentation, establishing the terminology and the concepts for dividing a measured areal surface into regions. The document works on the assumption of continuous surfaces. Clause 4 gives the detailed description of the segmentation and clause 5 the general description, covering the watershed algorithm that partitions the surface and the Wolfe pruning algorithm that removes the divisions between regions too slight to be treated as separate features. Informative annexes place the material against the filter matrix model and the GPS matrix model, and add a conceptual diagram. A surface is analysed feature by feature as well as by average height, and any count of features, or any measure of how deep they run, depends entirely on where the boundaries fall: without an agreed segmentation and an agreed pruning rule, two laboratories working from identical measured data report different results, and a texture requirement written on a drawing cannot be verified.
