Scope

GB/T 26694-2024 is the English-translated version of 家具绿色设计评价规范.

China's national specification for assessing the green design of furniture. It specifies the principles, the indicator system, the assessment method and the reporting for evaluating furniture products against green design criteria. Green design assessment is not the same thing as an emissions test, and the distinction is the point of the document. A furniture product can pass the formaldehyde limits and still be a poor design environmentally: made of a board that cannot be recycled, glued in a way that prevents disassembly, finished with a coating that constrains disposal, packaged in three times the material it needs, and built to a life shorter than the fashion it was made for. Assessing the design means looking at the whole life rather than at one emission at one moment. So the indicator system spans the stages. Materials: the proportion of renewable, recycled and certified material, the avoidance of restricted substances, and the recyclability of what is used. Manufacture: the energy and water per unit, the volatile organic compounds released in finishing, and the waste generated and recovered. Use: the durability and the strength and stability that determine how long the product lasts, the indoor air quality it produces in a real room rather than in a chamber, and the maintainability and reparability. End of life: the ease of disassembly, the separability of materials joined together, and the recyclability of the product as built rather than as designed on paper. The standard sets the indicators, states how each is measured or calculated, weights them, and defines the evidence required and the form of the assessment report - so that a claim of green design is verifiable rather than asserted. Issued on 29 June 2024 and in force since 1 January 2025, it replaces GB/T 26694-2011.
