Foreword

This document was issued on 6 August 2023 by the State Administration for Market Regulation; Standardization Administration of the PRC and takes effect on 1 September 2024.

It is a GB/T standard: recommended rather than compulsory, but it is the text a Chinese reviewer applies when assessing a submission.

1 Scope

GB/T 26174-2023 covers kitchen towel — how the product is sorted into superior and qualified grades and into towels made from plant fibre and other kinds, what may go into the furnish, the technical requirements the finished towel has to meet, and the methods used to check them. The raw material clause shuts out recycled paper, printed matter and other recovered fibrous material, because a kitchen towel is wiped over food, hands and cooking surfaces, and whatever the furnish carries goes with it. Test methods and the normative appendices cover water absorption time, powder drop rate, decolorization, the decomposable carcinogenic aromatic amines that dyes must not release, and the determination of microorganisms; the physical checks matter because a towel that sheds fibre onto a wet plate or bleeds colour into a spill has failed at the job it was bought for. Inspection rules call for factory inspection batch by batch before goods leave the mill, and the closing clauses deal with sales and transport packaging, the marking a pack has to show, and the transport and storage conditions that keep an absorbent paper product clean and dry until it is opened. Of use to tissue mills and converters, retail and catering buyers, and testing laboratories.

This document specifies the classification, raw material requirements, technical

requirements, test methods, inspection rules, marking, packaging, transportation, and

storage of kitchen towels.

This document is applicable to paper towels used for kitchen wiping, cleaning, etc.

2 Normative references

3 Terms and definitions

The following terms and definitions apply to this document.

3.1 kitchen towel from plant fiber

Kitchen towels produced from native plant fibers.

4 Classification

4.1 Kitchen towels are divided into superior products and qualified products according

to product quality.

4.2 Kitchen towels are divided into kitchen towels from plant fiber and kitchen towels

from other fiber according to fiber raw materials.

5 Raw material requirements

5.1 Any recycled paper, paper printed matter, paper products, and other recycled fibrous

materials shall not be used as raw materials for kitchen towels.

5.2 The natural color pulp used in natural color kitchen towels shall comply with the

requirements of QB/T 5742.

6 Technical requirements

6.1 The technical indicators of kitchen towels from plant fiber shall comply with the

provisions of Table 1.

6.3 The chemical performance indicators of kitchen towels shall comply with the

requirements in Table 3.

6.4 The microbiological indicators of kitchen towels shall comply with the requirements

in Table 4.

6.5 The width deviation and pitch deviation of roll kitchen towels and jumbo roll

kitchen towels shall not exceed +/-5 mm; the dimensional deviation of flat-cut kitchen

towels and drawable kitchen towels shall not exceed +/-5 mm, and the deviation shall not

exceed 3 mm.

7 Test methods

7.1 Sampling and processing of specimens

The sampling shall be carried out in accordance with GB/T 450.When determining

grammage, water absorption time, water absorption capacity, oil absorption capacity,

transverse tensile strength, and longitudinal wet tensile strength, the specimen

processing and standard atmospheric conditions for testing shall be in accordance with

the provisions of GB/T 10739.

7.2 Grammage

Grammage determination is carried out according to GB/T 24328.5, and the result is

expressed as a single layer.

7.7 Transverse tensile strength

The transverse tensile strength is measured according to GB/T 24328.3 and measured

according to the finished product layer. The width of the specimen is (50.0+/-0.5) mm or

(15.0+/-0.1) mm. The width of the specimen during arbitration is (50.0+/-0.5) mm.

7.9 Powder drop rate

The powder drop rate is measured according to Appendix B.

7.10 Holes

Hold the two corners of the specimen (finished product layer) with both hands and

observe with the naked eye against the light. If holes are found, use a steel ruler to

measure the maximum size of the holes. The area of the specimen (finished product

layer) measured for each sample shall be no less than 0.5 m2 and then converted into

the number of holes per square meter (finished product layer). If there are holes larger

than 5 mm, at least 1 m2 of the specimen shall be measured.

7.13 Delivery moisture

The delivery moisture content is measured according to GB/T 462.

7.14 Migratable fluorescent substances

Place the specimen under an ultraviolet lamp and check whether there is fluorescence

under ultraviolet light at wavelengths 254 nm and 365 nm. If the specimen has no

fluorescence under UV light, the result is that there is no migratable fluorescent

substance; if the specimen has fluorescence, the migratable fluorescent substance shall

be measured in accordance with Chapter 5 of GB/T 27741-2018.

7.15 Acrylamide

Acrylamide is measured according to GB/T 37859.

7.16 Decolorization performance

Decolorization performance is measured according to Appendix C.

7.20 Dimensional deviation

7.20.1 Width deviation of roll and jumbo roll kitchen towels

Take 3 complete specimens from each sample, measure the width of each specimen

(reel) with a steel ruler or steel tape measure with a graduation value of 1 mm, and

subtract the nominal width from the average width of the 3 specimens to express the

width deviation; the results are rounded to 1 mm.

7.21 Deviation

The deviation is measured according to GB/T 451.1.

7.22 Appearance quality

Appearance quality shall be inspected visually. When measuring, a whole roll (jumbo

roll, package) of paper shall be selected and opened completely for visual inspection.

8 Inspection rules

8.1 Inspection classification

8.1.1 Factory inspection

Before leaving the factory, products shall be inspected batch by batch in accordance

with the requirements of this document. The inspection items are shown in Table 5.

Products must meet the requirements of this document before they can leave the factory.

8.2 Inspection items

The factory inspection items are routine inspection items, and the type inspection items

include all inspection items (except for special provisions). See Table 5 for details.

8.3 Batch grouping rules and sampling plan

8.3.1 Batch grouping rules

The quantity of one delivery of similar products made from the same raw materials, the

same technology, and with the same specifications is one batch, and the quantity of each

batch shall not exceed 10,000 boxes (pieces).

8.3.2 Sampling plan

8.4 Judgment rules

8.4.1 Judgment of items

8.4.1.1 Technical indicators

If the technical indicators of the sample meet the requirements of 6.1 or 6.2 respectively,

the items will be judged to be qualified, otherwise, they will be judged to be unqualified.

8.4.1.5 Appearance quality

If the appearance quality of the sample meets the requirements of 6.6, the item will be

judged to be qualified, otherwise, it will be judged to be unqualified.

8.4.1.6 Net content

If the net content of the sample meets the requirements of 6.7, the item will be judged

to be qualified, otherwise, it will be judged to be unqualified.

8.4.2 Judgment of batches

Among all inspection items, if the microbiological indicator test results are unqualified,

the batch will be judged to be unqualified; for technical indicators, chemical

performance indicators, dimensional deviation, deviation, appearance quality, and net

content, the number of samples for the first inspection shall be equal to the first sample

size given in the plan.

9 Marking and packaging

9.1 Marking and packaging for product sales

9.1.1 The product sales package marks shall at least include the following content.

9.1.2 The sales package of the product shall be able to ensure that the product is not

contaminated. The various identification information on the sales package shall be clear

and not easy to fade..

9.2 Product transport package marks

Transport package marks shall at least include the following content.

10 Transportation and storage

10.1 Clean transportation tools shall be used during the transportation of kitchen towels

to prevent product contamination.

10.2 During transporting, pay attention to the integrity of the packaging and do not drop

the paper from high places to prevent damage to the outer packaging.
