Scope
GB/T 23538-2023 is the English-translated version of 普通磨料 球磨韧性测定方法.
GB/T 23538-2023 describes how to determine the ball milling toughness index of conventional abrasives such as corundum and silicon carbide. The sample is ball milled and sieved under set conditions, and the index is the ratio of the mass retained on the sieve to the recovered mass, times 100.
It fixes the tester: a rotary drive at (75±1) r/min, a revolution counter adjustable from 0 to 9999 with an error of no more than two turns, a mill pot 165 mm by 190 mm holding about 4000 cm³, and steel balls to GB/T 308.1.
It also covers sample preparation, the test procedure and the report, and an annex gives how the tester is adjusted. It applies to grit sizes F8 to F150. It replaces GB/T 23538-2009, was issued on 27 November 2023 and has applied since 1 June 2024.

Foreword
This document complies with the provisions of GB/T 1.1-2020 "Standardization Work Guidelines Part 1: Structure and Drafting Rules of Standardization Documents" Drafting.
This document replaces GB/T 23538-2009 "Method for determination of toughness of ordinary abrasive ball milling". Compared with GB/T 23538-2009, except In addition to structural adjustments and editorial changes, the main technical changes are as follows:
a) Changed the definition of ball milling toughness (see 3.1, 2009 version of 3.1);
b) Changed the technical requirements for the rotary drive device of the ball mill toughness tester (see 4.1.2, 4.1.3 of the 2009 edition);
c) Changed the technical conditions of steel balls (see 4.1.4, 2009 version of 4.1.4);
d) The sample preparation method has been changed (see Chapter 5, 5.1 of the 2009 edition);
e) The test procedures have been changed (see Chapter 6, 5.2 and 5.3 of the 2009 edition);
f) Deleted the reference accuracy (Chapter 6 of the 2009 edition);
g) Added requirements for test reports (see Chapter 8);
h) The adjustment method of the ball mill toughness tester has been changed (see Appendix A, Appendix A of the 2009 version).
1 Scope
This document describes methods for determining the ball grinding toughness of common abrasives such as corundum and silicon carbide.
This document is applicable to the determination of ball grinding toughness of ordinary abrasives with particle sizes of F8~F150.
2 Normative reference documents
The contents of the following documents constitute essential provisions of this document through normative references in the text. Among them, the dated quotations For undated referenced documents, only the version corresponding to that date applies to this document; for undated referenced documents, the latest version (including all amendments) applies to this document.
GB/T 308.1 Rolling bearing balls Part 1: Steel balls
GB/T 2481.1 Detection and marking of abrasive grain size composition for bonded abrasive tools Part 1: Coarse abrasive grains F4~F220
GB/T 4676 Ordinary abrasive sampling method
3 Terms and definitions
The following terms and definitions apply to this document.
3.1 Ball milling toughness
The ability of the abrasive to resist ball mill breakage.
Note: The value is expressed by multiplying the ratio of the mass of the material on the sieve to the recovered mass of the sample by 100 after the sample is ball milled and sieved under specified conditions.
4 Instruments and Equipment
4.1 Ball mill toughness tester
4.1.1 Composition of ball mill toughness tester
The ball mill toughness tester consists of a rotary drive device, a ball mill tank and steel balls.
4.1.2 Rotary drive device
The following technical requirements should be met:
---Rotation speed: (75±1)r/min;
---The number of rotations is continuously adjustable within (0~9999) times, and the error is no more than 2 times.
4.1.3 Ball mill tank
The following technical requirements should be met:
---Ball mill tank cavity size: phi165mm×190mm;
---Ball mill tank volume: about 4000cm³;
