1 Scope

China's national product standard for umbrellas. It specifies the product classification, the requirements, the test methods, the inspection rules and the marks, packaging, transport and storage, and it applies to fabric umbrellas, plastic umbrellas and umbrellas built on frames of various materials. Where GB/T 23103 covers the sun umbrella and its ultraviolet claim, this standard covers the umbrella that has to keep rain off and survive being used in wind. Those are mechanical problems and the requirements are correspondingly mechanical. Water resistance comes first: the fabric must not let water through under the conditions of use, and the seams and the tip are where it does. Then the frame, which is where an umbrella actually fails. A ribbed canopy in a gust is a structure loaded in a direction it was not designed for, and it either inverts and recovers or inverts and breaks; the standard therefore specifies the wind resistance and the number of inversion cycles the frame must survive, along with the strength of the ribs and stretchers and of the joints between them. The opening and closing mechanism is tested over a number of cycles because it is the part that is operated most and the part whose failure ends the product's life while everything else is intact. And the canopy-to-rib attachment is specified separately because that is where a canopy tears. Around them sit the colour fastness to light and to rubbing, the dimensions, the safety requirements on the rib ends and the tip, and the chemical limits that apply to consumer textiles. Issued on 14 May 2018 and in force since 1 December 2018, it replaces GB/T 23147-2008.

This standard specifies the product classification, requirements, test methods, inspection rules and signs, packaging, transportation and storage of the umbrella. This standard applies to fabric umbrellas, plastic umbrellas and umbrellas made of different material umbrella stands.
