1 Scope

China's national product standard for sun umbrellas. It specifies the product classification, the requirements, the test methods, the inspection rules, and the marks, packaging, transport and storage, and it applies to hand-held umbrellas made from fabrics of various materials on an umbrella frame. It does not apply to mechanical or electrically operated parasols. A sun umbrella is sold on a claim that a rain umbrella does not make, and the claim is the reason for the standard. Protection from ultraviolet radiation is a health claim, it is invisible, and the consumer has no way to verify it: a dark, heavy-looking fabric may transmit more ultraviolet than a light one, since transmission depends on the fibre, the weave density, the finish and the coating rather than on how opaque the fabric looks. So the central requirements are the ultraviolet protection factor and the ultraviolet transmittance, measured by a defined method - and, critically, retained after use, since the coating that provides most of the protection on a coated fabric is exactly what abrades and washes off. Around them sit the properties that make the umbrella an umbrella: the strength of the frame and its resistance to wind, the operation of the opening and closing mechanism over a number of cycles, the strength of the joint between canopy and ribs, which is where an umbrella tears, the colour fastness to light and to rubbing, and the dimensions. The safety requirements cover the rib ends and the tip, which are the parts that injure people, and the chemical limits that apply to any consumer textile. Issued on 14 May 2018 and in force since 1 December 2018, it replaces GB/T 23103-2008.

This standard specifies the product classification, requirements, test methods, inspection rules and signs, packaging, transportation and storage of sun umbrella products. This standard applies to fabrics of different materials and hand-held umbrellas made of umbrella stands. This standard does not apply to mechanical and electric parasols.
