1 Scope

China's national standard for compound feed for basa catfish. It is Part 8 of GB/T 22919 and defines the terms and definitions, gives the product classification and specifies the technical requirements, the inspection rules, the labelling, packaging, transport and storage. Basa, the striped catfish of the Mekong, became one of the most produced farmed fish in the world within about twenty years, and it did so on characteristics that make the feed formulation distinctive. The fish is an air-breather with an accessory respiratory organ, so it tolerates dissolved oxygen levels that would kill almost any other farmed species, which is why it is grown at stocking densities several times higher than normal. It is omnivorous with a strong tolerance for plant protein and carbohydrate, and it grows extremely fast. Those three together mean the feed is fed in very large quantity into water with little oxygen to spare, so two properties matter beyond nutrition: the feed conversion ratio, because at these densities a small inefficiency is a large mass of waste, and the water stability and sinking behaviour of the pellet, because feed that disintegrates consumes the oxygen the fish needs. The standard therefore sets the crude protein and lipid by growth stage at levels appropriate to an omnivore rather than a carnivore, the amino acid requirements, the fibre and ash ceilings, the moisture and the pellet durability and water stability - along with the safety limits on mycotoxins, heavy metals and prohibited substances, which for an export species are commercially decisive as well as regulatory. This document defines the terms and definitions of pangasius compound feed, gives product classification, and stipulates technical requirements, inspection rules, labels, Packaging, transportation, storage and shelf life, and the corresponding sampling and testing methods are described. This document applies to the production and use of pangasius feed.
