This standard describes a method for determining the ultimate aerobic biodegradability of plastic materials in soil. The approach measures either the oxygen demand or the carbon dioxide released in a closed respirometer, giving a way to follow how far a plastic is converted by microorganisms under aerobic conditions. It is a recommended national standard.

Producers of biodegradable and compostable plastics, packaging and agricultural film manufacturers, environmental testing laboratories and certification bodies are the main users. Researchers comparing material formulations and regulators or buyers who ask for biodegradation evidence may also refer to it.

Issued on 25 May 2026, it takes effect on 1 December 2026 and replaces GB/T 22047-2008. Laboratories that currently run the earlier method should review their equipment and reporting before the new edition applies.
