Scope
GB/T 12994-2008 is the English-translated version of 种子加工机械 术语.
GB/T 12994-2008 is the Chinese terminology standard for seed processing machinery, defining the terms relating to processing technology, machines and implements, components, technical indicators and working parameters, with the English equivalent of each term printed beside the Chinese.
It applies to processing machinery for crop seeds, forest tree seeds and forage grass seeds.
The processing-technology clause covers drying, preconditioning, cleaning and grading by air, screen, indent, colour, electrical, surface and wet methods, cottonseed delinting, physical and chemical seed treatment, coating, pelleting and storage; the machinery clause defines cleaners and separators from air-screen, indent cylinder and gravity separators to destoners, velvet roll, magnetic, electrostatic and colour separators; further clauses deal with components and with technical indicators and working parameters.
It replaces GB/T 12994-1991: definitions such as seed drying, seed cleaning, seed storage and the screen types were revised, natural and mechanical drying, other plant seeds and impurities were added, and obsolete terms such as monochromatic and bichromatic photoelectric sorters were removed.

Foreword
This standard is a revision of GB/T 12994-1991, Seed processing machinery - Terminology.
Compared with GB/T 12994-1991, the main changes in this standard are as follows:
- the definitions of seed drying, seed preconditioning, seed cleaning, seed storage, pure seed, vibrating separator, perforated screen, woven screen, welded wire screen, standard crop seed and others have been modified;
- the terms natural drying, mechanical drying, other plant seeds, impurities and others have been added;
- the terms removal of large impurities by screening (upper screening), removal of small impurities by screening (lower screening), positive sorting, reverse sorting, monochromatic photoelectric sorter, bichromatic photoelectric sorter, admixtures and others have been deleted.
From the date of its implementation, this standard replaces GB/T 12994-1991.
This standard was proposed by the China Machinery Industry Federation.
This standard is under the jurisdiction of the National Technical Committee on Agricultural Machinery of Standardization Administration of China (SAC/TC 201).
