Scope
GB/T 11847-2008 is the English-translated version of 二氧化铀粉末比表面积测定 BET容量法.
GB/T 11847-2008 specifies the BET capacity (volumetric gas adsorption) method, in single-point and multipoint versions, for determining the specific surface area of uranium dioxide powder over a range of 1 to 40 m2/g; it may also be used for reference with other powders and porous materials.
It sets out the principle of nitrogen physical adsorption at liquid nitrogen temperature and the BET equation, the formulas for the total quantity adsorbed, the monolayer capacity and the specific surface area, and the simplification used in the single-point method at relative pressures of 0.2 to 0.3.
The apparatus is a mercury-manometer BET analyser with defined volume ratios; the procedure covers degassing 1 to 3 g of specimen at 200 to 250 °C to 1 to 5 Pa, admission of nitrogen and reading of equilibrium pressures at 3 to 5 points, with the instrument constant calibrated in a normative annex and mercury density and nitrogen vapour pressure tables in an informative annex.
Stated precision is a relative standard deviation below 7.0 % for the single-point method and below 4.0 % for the multipoint method. It replaces GB/T 11847-1989, which covered the multipoint method only.

Foreword
This standard replaces GB/T 11847-1989, Determination of specific surface area of uranium dioxide powder - Multipoint BET method.
Compared with GB/T 11847-1989, the main changes in this standard are as follows:
- the single-point BET method has been added, including its principle, test procedure, calculation of results and method precision;
- materials have been added to the apparatus and materials, and the liquid oxygen thermometer has been replaced by a liquid nitrogen thermometer;
- the specimen mass and the range of degassing vacuum have been adjusted;
- the calibration of the instrument constant has been made normative Annex A;
- the table of mercury density and the table of saturated vapour pressure have been made informative Annex B;
- the precautions for instrument assembly in former Annex A have been turned into technical parameters of the instrument.
Annex A of this standard is a normative annex and Annex B is an informative annex.
