Scope

GB 38185-2026 is the English-translated version of 重型汽车电子稳定性控制系统性能要求及试验方法.

GB 38185-2026 is the Chinese mandatory national standard on the performance requirements and test methods for electronic stability control (ESC) systems of heavy-duty vehicles.

It specifies the general requirements, performance requirements and test conditions for the ESC systems of vehicles of categories M2, M3, N2 and N3 as defined in GB/T 15089, and describes the corresponding test methods; it does not apply to special operation vehicles as defined in GB/T 17350.

The ESC must be able to apply braking torque to every wheel individually and work in all phases of driving - acceleration, coasting and deceleration including braking - except when switched off by the driver, below 20 km/h, for up to 2 min after start-up or in reverse, and its operation must not be affected by ABS or ASR activity.

Performance requirements cover the J-turn test (engine torque reduction, roll stability control with speed limits of 47 km/h and 45 km/h, and lane keeping), ESC malfunction detection and the ESC malfunction telltale, and functional safety; the standard also sets out the criteria for the same vehicle type and the implementation of the standard, with normative Annex A on ESC functional safety requirements and Annex B on the functional safety description.

It converts GB/T 38185-2019 into a mandatory standard, changing its scope and the J-turn roll stability requirement and adding functional safety, same-type and implementation requirements.

Issued on 30 July 2026 by SAMR and SAC, it takes effect on 1 January 2028. Classification: ICS 43.040.40, CCS T 24.

Foreword

This document is drafted in accordance with the rules given in GB/T 1.1-2020, Directives for standardization - Part 1: Rules for the structure and drafting of standardizing documents.

This document converts GB/T 38185-2019, Performance requirements and testing methods for electronic stability control system (ESC) for commercial vehicles, into a mandatory national standard. Compared with GB/T 38185-2019, apart from structural adjustments and editorial changes, the main technical changes are as follows:

a) the scope of application has been changed (see Clause 1; Clause 1 of the 2019 edition);

b) the performance requirement for roll stability control in the J-turn test has been changed (see 5.1.2; 5.1.2 of the 2019 edition);

c) functional safety requirements for the electronic stability control systems of heavy-duty vehicles have been added (see 5.5);

d) the additional test requirements have been deleted (see 7.10 of the 2019 edition);

e) requirements for the determination of the same type have been added (see Clause 8);

f) requirements for the implementation of the standard have been added (see Clause 9);

g) functional safety requirements have been added (see Annex A);

h) functional safety description requirements have been added (see Annex B).

Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent rights. The issuing authority shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.

This document was proposed by and is under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of the People's Republic of China.

This document and the document it replaces were issued as follows: first issued in 2019 as GB/T 38185-2019; this is the first revision, with the standard number changed to GB 38185-2026.

1 Scope

This document specifies the general requirements, performance requirements and test conditions for the electronic stability control systems of heavy-duty vehicles, and describes the corresponding test methods.

This document applies to the electronic stability control systems of vehicles of categories M2, M3, N2 and N3 as specified in GB/T 15089.

This document does not apply to special operation vehicles as defined in GB/T 17350.

3 Terms and definitions

For the purposes of this document, the terms and definitions given in GB/T 12549 and GB 30677 and the following apply.

3.1 ESC braking: the process in which the ESC commands braking of any wheel, with the brake pressure maintained for at least 0.5 s and reaching at least 34 kPa (for air braking systems) or 172 kPa (for hydraulic braking systems).

4 General requirements

The electronic stability control system (ESC) of a heavy-duty vehicle shall have the following functions:

a) it can apply braking torque to all wheels individually according to a given control logic (wheels controlled indirectly within the same group are regarded as the same wheel as the directly controlled wheel);

b) it works in all phases of driving, including acceleration, coasting and deceleration (including braking), except in the following cases: 1) the driver has switched off the ESC; 2) the vehicle speed is below 20 km/h; 3) the system self-check has been completed and the vehicle has been in the driving state specified in 7.8.2 for not more than 2 min; 4) the vehicle is in reverse;

c) its normal operation shall not be affected even while the anti-lock braking system (ABS) or the anti-slip regulation (ASR) is acting.

5.1 J-turn test

5.1.1 When tested in accordance with 7.7.2, at least 2 of every 4 consecutive runs shall meet the following requirements: a) from 1.5 s after the test vehicle enters the start point of the test until it passes the end point, the ESC shall reduce the engine or drive motor output torque by 10% or more below the torque requested by the driver, for at least 0.5 s; b) the wheels of the test vehicle shall remain within the test lane throughout from the start point to the end point of the test.

5.1.2 When tested in accordance with 7.7.3, at least 6 of every 8 runs shall meet the following requirements: a) 3 s after passing the start point, the speed of the test vehicle shall not exceed 47 km/h; for vehicles with a maximum design total mass of 3.5 t to 12 t, it shall not exceed the greater of 47 km/h and the maximum test entry speed reduced by 10%; b) 4 s after passing the start point, the speed shall not exceed 45 km/h; for vehicles with a maximum design total mass of 3.5 t to 12 t, it shall not exceed the greater of 45 km/h and the maximum test entry speed reduced by 15%; c) the wheels shall remain within the test lane from the start point to the end point; d) ESC braking shall be activated.

5.2 ESC malfunction detection

5.2.1 The vehicle shall be fitted with an ESC malfunction telltale that warns the driver when any malfunction occurs that affects ESC control or the generation or transmission of response signals.

5.2.2 The ESC malfunction telltale shall: a) be within the driver's forward field of view, so that the driver can check from the driving position that it is working; b) show one of the ESC malfunction symbols in Figure 1 or the letters "ESC"; c) be upright when viewed while the vehicle is being driven; d) be yellow or amber; e) when lit, be bright and conspicuous enough for the driver to see it clearly, by day or night, once adapted to the ambient road lighting.
