Scope

GB 1903.60-2023 is the English-translated version of 食品安全国家标准食品营养强化剂 L-肉碱酒石酸盐.

GB 1903.60-2023 is the Chinese national food safety standard for L-carnitine tartrate used as a food nutritional fortifier, produced by reacting the nutritional fortifier L-carnitine with the food additive tartaric acid.

It gives the chemical name (R)-bis[(3-carboxy-2-hydroxypropyl)trimethylamino]-L-tartrate, the molecular formula C18H36N2O12 and the relative molecular mass 472.49, from the 2018 international relative atomic masses.

The sensory requirement is a white crystalline powder observed under natural light, and the standard then sets the physical and chemical indicators, with the inspection methods in the normative Appendices A and B. Against the edition it replaces it revises the identification of L-carnitine, adds one for tartaric acid, adds potentiometric titration, drops the heavy metals limit in favour of a lead limit and revises the total arsenic method.

It replaces GB 25550-2010, was issued on 6 September 2023 and has applied since 6 March 2024.

This standard replaces GB 25550-2010 "National Food Safety Standard Food Additive L-Carnitine Tartrate".

Appendix A and Appendix B of this standard are normative appendices.

Compared with GB 25550-2010, the main changes in this standard are as follows.

---The name of the standard is modified to "National Food Safety Standard Food Nutritional Enhancer L-Carnitine Tartrate";

---Modified the identification test of L-carnitine;

---Added identification test for tartaric acid;

---The detection methods of L-carnitine and tartaric acid have been modified and the potentiometric titration method has been added;

---Deleted the heavy metal indicator and added the lead indicator and its inspection method;

---Modified the detection method of total arsenic.
