Scope

GB 16715.5-2010 is the English-translated version of 瓜菜作物种子 第5部分:绿叶菜类.

Part 5 of China's mandatory national standard for vegetable seed, covering leaf vegetables. The group takes in lettuce, spinach, celery, amaranth and the other crops harvested for their foliage, and its seed has a characteristic the fruiting vegetables do not share: it is often small, short-lived and prone to dormancy. Lettuce seed will not germinate above a certain temperature, spinach seed loses viability in a year or two in ordinary storage, and celery seed germinates slowly and unevenly at the best of times. That makes the germination guarantee and the moisture limit the operative parts of the standard for this group, because they are what determine whether a lot still performs when it reaches the grower. The standard sets the grades and the minima for varietal purity, germination, cleanliness and moisture, with the sampling and the test methods.
