Scope
GB 14891.5-1997 is the English-translated version of 辐照新鲜水果、蔬菜类卫生标准.
GB 14891.5-1997 is the Chinese mandatory hygienic standard for irradiated fresh fruits and vegetables, part of the GB 14891 series on irradiated foods.
It specifies the technical requirements and test methods for fresh produce irradiated to inhibit sprouting, preserve freshness or delay ripening, using Co-60 or Cs-137 gamma-rays, X-rays below 5 MeV or electron beams below 10 MeV.
Produce must be sorted before treatment; the overall average absorbed dose is limited to 1.5 kGy with a dose uniformity ratio of not more than 2, and a reference table gives typical doses for 17 products, from 0.1 kGy for potatoes, onions, garlic and ginger to 1.0 kGy for mushrooms and grapes and 1.5 kGy for strawberries.
Sensory requirements are set, pesticide, fluorine and arsenic residues must meet GB 2763, GB 4788, GB 4809, GB 4810 and GB 5127, and testing follows the GB 5009 methods.
It replaces GB 9980-88, GB 14891.5-94, GB 14891.7-94, GB 14891.8-94 and ZB C53 001, 003, 004 and 006-84, merging the earlier single-product standards for garlic, mushrooms, potatoes, onions, apples, tomatoes, litchi and mandarin oranges into one standard for the food class.
Issued on 1 June 1997, in force since 1 January 1998. Classification: ICS 67.080.20, CCS C 53. The document runs to 4 pages, delivered complete in English translation.

Foreword
This standard has been formulated on the basis of the hygienic standards for individual irradiated foods established during the Sixth and Seventh Five-Year Plan periods, with reference to the guidelines on food irradiation of international organisations such as FAO/WHO/IAEA and with relevant domestic and foreign data collected. The research underlying hygienic standards by food class is fairly complete and systematic and is relatively advanced internationally, and the human feeding trials of irradiated foods have had a certain influence internationally. Formulating standards by food class therefore saves manpower and financial resources, while broadening the range of foods covered and increasing the usefulness of the standards.
From the date of its implementation this standard replaces ZB C53 001-84 Hygienic standard for irradiated garlic, ZB C53 003-84 Hygienic standard for irradiated mushrooms, ZB C53 004-84 Hygienic standard for irradiated potatoes, ZB C53 006-84 Hygienic standard for irradiated onions, GB 9980-88 Hygienic standard for irradiated apples, GB 14891.5-94 Hygienic standard for irradiated tomatoes, GB 14891.7-94 Hygienic standard for irradiated litchi and GB 14891.8-94 Hygienic standard for irradiated mandarin oranges.
This standard was proposed by the Ministry of Health of the People's Republic of China and is under the technical responsibility of the Institute of Nutrition and Food Hygiene of the Chinese Academy of Preventive Medicine.
This standard was drafted by the Shanghai Municipal Institute for Food Hygiene Supervision and Inspection, the Irradiation Base of the Shanghai Institute of Nuclear Research of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Henan Provincial Institute for Food Hygiene Supervision and Inspection.
Main drafters of this standard: Zhang Weilan, Jiang Peizhen, Xu Zhicheng, Ma Luocheng, Wang Peiren.
This standard is interpreted by the Chinese Academy of Preventive Medicine, the technical focal unit entrusted by the Ministry of Health.
Approved by the Ministry of Health of the People's Republic of China on 1997-06-16; implemented on 1998-01-01.
Classification: ICS 67.080.20, CCS C 53.
1 Scope
This standard specifies the technical requirements and test methods for irradiated fresh fruits and vegetables.
This standard applies to fresh fruits and vegetables treated, for the purposes of inhibiting sprouting, preserving freshness in storage or delaying ripening to extend shelf life, with gamma-rays produced by Co-60 or Cs-137, X-rays of energy below 5 MeV or electron beams of energy below 10 MeV.
