Scope
GB 14891.2-1994 is the English-translated version of 辐照花粉卫生标准.
GB 14891.2-1994 is the Chinese mandatory hygienic standard for irradiated pollen, part of the GB 14891 series on irradiated foods.
It specifies the technical requirements and test methods for pure and mixed bee pollen from maize, buckwheat, sorghum, sesame, rape, sunflower and Chinese milk vetch that has been irradiated with gamma-rays or electron beams to keep it fresh, prevent mould and extend its storage period.
The overall average absorbed dose is set at 8 kGy (Co-60 or Cs-137 gamma-rays, or electron beams below 10 MeV) with uniform irradiation; the standard fixes the sensory characteristics, limits for moisture (<= 10%), mercury, lead, arsenic, BHC and DDT, and bacteriological limits for total bacterial count, coliforms, pathogens and moulds.
Testing follows GB 5009 for the physical and chemical indicators and GB 4789 for the bacteriological indicators. Issued on 2 February 1994, in force since 1 July 1994; first edition.
Classification: CCS C 53. The document runs to 3 pages, delivered complete in English translation.

1 Subject content and scope of application
This standard specifies the technical requirements and test methods for irradiated pollen.
This standard applies to pure pollen and mixed pollen from the nectar sources maize, buckwheat, sorghum, sesame, rape, sunflower and Chinese milk vetch, irradiated with gamma-rays or electron beams.
2 Normative references
GB 4789 Microbiological examination of food hygiene
GB 5009 Methods of physical and chemical examination of food hygiene
3 Terms
Pollen: the male reproductive cells of plants collected by honeybees.
4 Technical requirements
4.1 Irradiated pollen
Irradiated pollen is pollen that has been irradiated with gamma-rays or electron beams for the purposes of keeping it fresh, preventing mould and extending its storage period.
4.2 Irradiation dose limit
Fresh raw pollen irradiated with Co-60 or Cs-137 gamma-rays, or with electron beams of less than 10 MeV produced by an electron accelerator, shall receive an overall average absorbed dose of 8 kGy.
4.3 Irradiation principle
Irradiation shall be uniform, and the dose shall be reliable and accurate.
5 Sensory indicators
The package shall be intact. The pollen shall be orange-yellow, pale yellow or yellow-green granules with a slightly bitter and astringent taste and the characteristic aroma of pollen, with no off-odour, no impurities, no insects, no mould or caking and no mites.
6 Physical and chemical indicators
The physical and chemical indicators are given in Table 1.
Table 1 (indicator, mg/kg): Moisture, % <= 10; Mercury (as Hg) <= 0.015; Lead (as Pb) <= 0.5; Arsenic (as As) <= 0.5; BHC (hexachlorocyclohexane) <= 0.1; DDT <= 0.1.
7 Bacteriological indicators
The bacteriological indicators are given in Table 2.
Table 2: Total bacterial count, per g <= 100; Coliform bacteria, per 100 g <= 30; Pathogenic bacteria (intestinal pathogenic bacteria and pathogenic cocci): not to be detected; Mould count, per g: 100.
8 Test methods
The physical and chemical indicators are tested in accordance with GB 5009.
The bacteriological indicators are tested in accordance with GB 4789.
