Scope

TB/T 1979-2023 is the English-translated version of 机车车辆特种金属材料 耐大气腐蚀钢.

TB/T 1979-2023 is the Chinese railway industry standard for atmospheric corrosion-resistant (weathering) steel used in locomotives and rolling stock - the low-alloy steel that forms a protective rust layer and is used for car bodies, underframes and other structures exposed to the weather. Freight wagons and passenger cars are expected to last decades with limited repainting, so the railway specifies its own weathering steel grades rather than relying on general structural steel. The standard is part of a series on special metallic materials for locomotives and rolling stock and sets the grades and the requirements a steel supplier must meet for this use. Issued by the National Railway Administration on 14 September 2023 and applicable since 1 April 2024, it replaces TB/T 1979-2014.
