1 Scope
This standard specifies the names, the terms and the definitions relating to sowing, planting and transplanting machinery.

3.1 Sowing machinery - General terms
3.1.1 broadcasting: a method of sowing in which the seed is spread over the surface of the field at a given seed rate.
3.1.2 drilling: a method of sowing in which the seed is placed in rows in the furrow at a given row spacing, sowing density in seeds per metre and sowing depth.
3.1.3 hill-drop planting: a method of sowing in which the seed is placed in clusters in the furrow or in the hill at a given row spacing, hill spacing, sowing depth and seed rate, and is then covered with soil.
3.1.4 precision planting: a method of sowing in which the seed is placed in the furrow or in the hill at an exact number of seeds, spacing and depth, and is then covered with soil.
3.1.5 single seed precision planting: a method of sowing in which single seeds are placed in the furrow at an exact seed spacing and depth, and are then covered with soil.
3.1.6 flat sowing: a method of sowing directly on level ground that has not been ridged or bedded.
3.1.7 ridge drilling: a method of sowing in which the seed is placed on the ridge.
3.1.8 furrow drilling: a method of sowing in which the seed is placed in the furrow between the ridges.
