The polarity constant of liquid stationary phases in gas chromatography is the subject of HG/T 3500-2011, a recommended Chinese chemical industry standard. It states the reagents, the instruments and the method of determination and calculation for the test.

Polarity is measured as the difference in retention indices obtained for five standard components, benzene, n-butanol, 2-pentanone, 1-nitropropane and pyridine, between the stationary phase under test and squalane, which gives a relative measure of polarity.

The test applies to stationary phase products whose upper temperature limit is 120 °C or above, examined on a 102 white support. It is used with GB/T 6682, GB/T 8980-1996 and GB/T 9722, and it supersedes HG/T 3500-1982. Issued on 20 December 2011, it has applied since 1 July 2012.
