1 Scope

This document establishes the general rules for sampling when musical instruments are tested for limits on harmful substances, and specifies the sampling locations, the test items and the requirements on the storage and the labelling of the laboratory sample.

This document applies to the testing for harmful substances of common musical instruments, of instrument accessories and of instrument packaging kept indoors.

2 Normative references

The following document contains provisions which, through normative reference in this text, constitute indispensable provisions of this document. For dated references, only the edition cited applies. For undated references, the latest edition of the referenced document, including any amendments, applies.

3 Terms and definitions

For the purposes of this document, the following terms and definitions apply.

3.1 normal use situation - the operations a player performs on the instrument, on instrument accessories and on instrument packaging kept indoors as playing requires.

3.2 accessible part - a position that the skin of the human body touches directly. Note: incidental contact is excluded.

4 General rules for sampling

4.1 The test sample should be taken directly from the product; alternatively the same material as the product, together with the substrate material attached to it, may be taken where the manufacturer undertakes to supply material representative of the product. For arbitration inspection the sample shall be taken directly from the product.

4.2 Where several locations on the same product are of the same material, sampling may be carried out at one of them, once the client has given an undertaking and stated this expressly.

4.3 When testing is carried out, except for tests on volatile harmful substances and on substances restricted in electronic components, the sample shall be taken at a location that is accessible under normal use, or that comes into direct contact with the mouth.

4.4 Where the same sample is to undergo both a test for volatile harmful substances and a destructive test, the test for volatile harmful substances shall be carried out first and the destructive test afterwards.

5 Sampling locations

Sampling locations shall meet Table 1, which lists thirty-nine entries by broad class of instrument, giving the product name and the parts from which the sample is taken.

Among the idiophones: gongs and cymbals, sampled at the body, the beater, the hand rope of the gong and the grip of the cymbal; tubular bells, at the striking mallet, the metal tubes and the stand; the xylophone, at the mallet, the bars and the frame.

Among the membranophones: the jazz drum, sampled at the drumsticks, the drumhead, the head hoop, the drum stool seat and the stand; the timpani, at the mallet, the head, the tuning system, the stand and the head hoop; the marching band drum, at the sticks, the head, the head hoop, the carrying strap and the carrier.

Among the electrophones: the electric guitar, sampled at the tuning pegs, the body, the neck, the strings, the tone selector switch, the tone and volume control knobs, the decorative plate, the tremolo unit, the bridge, the fine tuning screws, the fret markers, the frets and the fingerboard; the electronic piano, the electronic keyboard, the MIDI keyboard, the synthesizer and the electronic organ, at the white keys, the black keys, the control knobs, the control panel, the modulation and pitch bend wheels, the case and the music stand; the electronic drum, at the sticks, the drums, the cymbals, the control knobs and the control panel; the electronic wind instrument, at the mouthpiece, the case, the key buttons, the octave roller, the glide bar, the thumb rest, the pitch bend plate and the touch screen.

Entry 38 covers instrument accessories - tuning wrenches, plectrums, finger picks, rosin, stools, music stands and similar accessories - and entry 39 the packaging kept indoors, such as instrument cases and gig bags, sampled at the inner and outer surfaces, the shoulder strap and the handle.

6 Test items

Test items shall meet Table 2, which pairs fifteen materials or locations with the substances to be tested for.

1 Non-textile polymeric materials, such as plastics and rubber: phthalates, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and migratable elements. 2 Plastic-coated paper or paperboard: the same three. 3 Artificial leather: phthalates, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, migratable elements, aromatic amine dyes (except where not printed or dyed), tetrachlorophenol and pentachlorophenol. 4 Removable coatings, such as paint and pigments: polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and migratable elements. 5 Composite board: polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, migratable elements and pentachlorophenol.

6 Textiles: polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, migratable elements, aromatic amine dyes (except where not printed or dyed), tetrachlorophenol and pentachlorophenol. 7 Leather and fur: migratable elements, aromatic amine dyes (except where not printed or dyed), tetrachlorophenol and pentachlorophenol. 8 Wood: migratable elements and pentachlorophenol. 9 Paper or paperboard, 10 glass, ceramic or metal, and 11 animal bone, animal tooth, mother-of-pearl and other materials that can be soaked and dyed: migratable elements.

12 Musical instruments, instrument accessories and instrument packaging kept indoors: benzene series, total volatile organic compounds and formaldehyde. 13 Electronic components: substances restricted in electronic parts. 14 Ceramic and 15 stone: naturally occurring radionuclides. Footnote a to entry 10 states that glass, ceramic or metal means specifically the parts that, under normal use, are removable and meet 8.5 of GB 6675.4-2014 as accessible parts.

7 Storage of the sample

The sample shall be stored so as to avoid the effect of contamination.

8 Labelling

The label of the sample shall contain at least the following information: a) the sample number; b) the product model; c) the test item; d) the name of the part.
