1 Scope

GB/T 8174-2025 is the Chinese national standard covering measuring how well insulation on a plant actually performs - the surface temperature survey and the heat flow measurement, the ambient conditions recorded with it, the loss per metre or per square metre calculated, and the judgement against the design value. Issued on 31 October 2025, it has been in force since 1 May 2026, replacing GB/T 8174-2008.

This document specifies the testing methods, requirements, organization and preparation, data acquisition and processing for the insulation performance of equipment and pipelines. Measurement uncertainty, insulation effect evaluation, engineering quality analysis and test evaluation report. This document applies to the testing and evaluation of the insulation performance of equipment, pipelines and their accessories at temperatures ranging from -196°C to 850°C. This document does not apply to equipment and pipelines with special requirements in construction, cold storage, and systems such as nuclear energy, aviation, and aerospace.

3 Terms and Definitions

The following terms and definitions apply to this document.

3.1 Heat loss The surface heat flux density or linear heat flux density that the outer surface of an insulating structure loses (or absorbs) from the surrounding environment.

4.1 External Surface Temperature Test Method

4.1.1 Thermocouple method Thermocouples are directly and tightly attached to the outer surface of an insulating structure to measure its surface temperature. This is the basic method for testing the outer surface temperature of an insulating structure. method.

4.1.2 Surface Thermometer Method The surface temperature of a thermocouple, resistance temperature detector (RTD), or other surface temperature gauge is measured by placing its sensor in contact with the outer surface of the insulating structure being tested. The method can be followed according to the provisions of GB/T 17357.This is a commonly used method for field testing.

4.1.3 Infrared radiation thermometer method An infrared radiation thermometer is aimed at the outer surface of the insulating structure to measure its surface temperature. It is suitable for non-contact measurement and measurement of moving objects. Measurement of the body.
