Scope
GB/T 5001-2018 is the English-translated version of 日用陶瓷分类.
GB/T 5001-2018 sets out how domestic ceramics are classified in China. It applies to ceramic products for daily use and relies on the terms defined in GB/T 5000.
Domestic ceramics are divided into pottery and porcelain by water absorption, more than 5.0 % for pottery and 5.0 % or less for porcelain, and by the character of the body: unvitrified or poorly vitrified with a less dense structure for pottery, highly vitrified and dense with a stone-like or shell-like cross-section for porcelain.
Pottery is then divided further in a second table, where the kinds are told apart by the particles, pores and uniformity of the cross-section. Compared with the 1985 edition, the water absorption limits of the classifications have been revised.
It replaces GB 5001-1985, was issued on 15 March 2018 and has applied since 1 October 2018.

Foreword
This standard was drafted in accordance with the rules given in GB/T 1.1-2009.
This standard replaces GB/T 5001-1985 "Classification of Ceramics for Daily Use".
Compared with GB/T 5001-1985, the main technical changes are as follows.
--- Modify the index of water absorption in the classification of daily-use ceramics;
--- Modify the index of water absorption in pottery classification;
--- Modify the index of water absorption in porcelain classification.
