Scope

GB/T 46228-2025 is the English-translated version of 溴化异丁烯-异戊二烯橡胶(BIIR).

GB/T 46228-2025 is the Chinese national standard for brominated isobutylene-isoprene rubber, the bromobutyl rubber known as BIIR. It applies to the material obtained by brominating the butyl rubber that is made by low-temperature copolymerisation of isobutylene and isoprene with methyl chloride as the solvent.

It fixes the product grades - BIIR1932, BIIR1946, BIIR2032, BIIR2046 and BIIR2132, named according to GB/T 5577, the second character group standing for the characteristic properties of the rubber - and the requirements, the inspection rules, the marking and accompanying documents, and the packaging, transport and storage.

It also describes the test methods, which draw on GB/T 1232.1 for Mooney viscosity, GB/T 4498.1-2025 for ash, GB/T 24131.1-2018 for volatile matter and SH/T 1839 for bromine content. It was issued on 29 August 2025 and has applied since 1 March 2026.

Foreword

This document is in accordance with the provisions of GB/T 1.1-2020 "Guidelines for standardization work Part 1: Structure and drafting rules for standardization documents" Drafting.

1 Scope

This document specifies the product grades, requirements, inspection rules, marking and accompanying documents, packaging, transportation and storage, and the corresponding test methods for BIIR technical indicators are described.

This document applies to isobutylene-isoprene copolymers prepared by low-temperature copolymerization using isobutylene and isoprene as the main raw materials and methyl chloride as the solvent. The butyl rubber is then brominated to obtain bromobutyl rubber.

2 Normative references

The contents of the following documents constitute the essential clauses of this document through normative references in this document.

For referenced documents without a date, only the version corresponding to that date applies to this document; for referenced documents without a date, the latest version (including all amendments) applies to this document.
