1 Scope

GB/T 45058-2024 is the Chinese technical specification for surveying and assessing the biological resources of island and reef waters. The waters around islands and reefs are ecologically distinct from open sea and from coastal shelf: they are shallow, structurally complex, dominated by seagrass, macroalgae and coral, and they hold a disproportionate share of the biodiversity and of the fishery, while being the hardest environment in which to sample consistently. The standard sets the general requirements and then the survey methods by component: the marine ecological survey covering the physical and chemical environment, the seaweed and seagrass survey with its site layout and in-situ methods, the coral and benthic surveys, the plankton and nekton surveys and the fishery resource assessment, each with the station layout, the sampling gear and procedure, the sample handling and the analysis; and then the data processing, the assessment of the resources and their status, and the survey report. It takes effect on 1 July 2025.

3 Terms and definitions
