Scope

GB/T 44820-2024 is the English-translated version of 超压气球通用要求.

GB/T 44820-2024 is the Chinese national standard covering the free balloon whose internal gas pressure stays above the outside atmosphere at its design altitude — the categories, the platform, gondola and mission payload, the function, performance and interfaces, the safety that has to hold when the lifting gas is hydrogen rather than helium, the reliability, environmental adaptability, testability, maintainability and interchangeability, the test method for each of those, and the marking, accompanying documents, packaging, transport and storage. It builds on the balloon terminology of GB/T 43328-2023 and covers development, production and use. First edition. In force from 1 May 2025. Issued on 26 October 2024, it has been in force since 1 May 2025.

General requirements for superpressure balloons

1 Scope

This document specifies the classification, technical requirements, test methods, marking, accompanying documents, packaging, transportation and storage of super pressure balloons.

This document applies to the development, production, and use of super-pressure balloons that use lighter-than-air gases such as helium and hydrogen as buoyancy gases.

3 Terms and Definitions

The terms and definitions defined in GB/T 43328-2023 and the following apply to this document.

3.1 super pressure balloon

A free balloon in which the internal gas pressure of the balloon exceeds the external atmospheric pressure at the designed operating altitude.

Note. When there is no ambiguity, "superpressure balloon" is used to refer to "superpressure balloon system".

3.2 super pressure balloon platform super pressure balloon platform

The aerial platform portion of a superpressure balloon.

3.3 Pod gondola

Superpressure balloons are used to carry equipment and mission payloads.

[Source. GB/T 43328-2023, 6.2.2, modified]

3.4 mission payload

The superpressure balloon platform carries instruments, equipment, test organisms or test pieces to complete specific tasks.

Note. “Payload” is used to refer to “mission payload” when there is no ambiguity.
