GB/T 43901-2024 is the English-translated version of 镍铁 砷、锡、锑、铅和铋含量 电感耦合等离子体质谱法(ICP-MS).

China's national method for determining arsenic, tin, antimony, lead and bismuth in ferronickel by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Ferronickel is the form in which most nickel enters stainless steel, produced by smelting laterite ore, and the five elements in this method are the ones that matter as tramp impurities. They share a characteristic: they have low melting points, they segregate to grain boundaries during solidification and hot working, and in small quantities they cause hot shortness - the steel cracks when it is rolled or forged rather than deforming. Bismuth and lead are the worst offenders and are damaging at a few parts per million. Since laterite ores vary and the smelting does not remove these elements, the ferronickel has to be analysed, and the concentrations involved are low enough to require mass spectrometry rather than the optical emission methods used for the major constituents.
