Scope

GB/T 43831-2024 is the English-translated version of 棉及化纤纯纺、混纺本色布检验、标志与包装.

China's national standard for the inspection, marking and packing of grey woven fabric in cotton, man-made fibres and blends. Grey fabric is cloth as it leaves the loom, before bleaching, dyeing or finishing, and it is traded in enormous quantity between weavers and finishers who are often separate companies in different provinces or countries.

The transaction is awkward because the fabric's final appearance is not yet visible: the defects that matter - a broken end, a missing pick, a slub, a reed mark, an oil stain - are present but inconspicuous in grey cloth and become obvious after dyeing, by which time considerable value has been added to a piece that must now be downgraded.

Standardising the inspection, the defect classification and the point-scoring by which a piece is graded is therefore what allows grey fabric to be bought and sold on a description rather than on inspection of every metre.
