1 Scope

GB/T 43624-2023 is the Chinese vocabulary of wetlands. China passed its Wetland Protection Law in 2022, which made a legal category out of a word that ecologists, hydrologists, foresters and land administrators had each been using differently: whether a rice paddy, a reservoir margin or a seasonally flooded meadow is a wetland now determines what may be built on it. The standard defines the general concepts, the terms for wetland organisms, the terms of wetland protection and management, and the terms of wetland ecological restoration, giving each with its definition and English equivalent so that the law, the inventories and the international reporting under the Ramsar Convention rest on the same language. It took effect on 28 December 2023.
